Ende Januar / Anfang Februar sorgte eine massive Aktion gegen die Anti-Corona-Maßnahmen der kanadischen Regierung weltweit für Schlagzeilen. Während die einen eh die ganze Zeit auf die richtige Signale warten, war es für andere schwer, den Protest der kanadischen Trucker einzuordnen. Ich gehe davon aus, dass zwei Wochen später der Kontext wenigstens grob allgemein bekannt ist: seit eben fast zwei Wochen wird die kanadische Hauptstadt und auch einige Grenzübergänge zu den USA von Hunderten von LKWs zugeparkt und blockiert. Wegen der Impfpflicht für FahrerInnen angeblich und trotz allgemein hohen Impfquote und Zustimmung zu Hygienemaßnahmen in der Bevölkerung und unter der FernfahrerInnen insbesondere.
The so-called “Freedom Convoy” protest in Ottawa this weekend has attracted demonstrators flying Nazi and Confederate flags. In photos shared to social media, many were calling out the use of symbols of hate in a peaceful protest.
(…) With an estimated 90% of Canadian truckers reportedly vaccinated and protesters being disavowed by the Canadian Trucking Alliance, many of the protesters in Ottawa have no connection to the trucking industry.
Es mehren sich auch ZeugInnenberichte und Analysen der Lage vor Ort, die den Protest nicht unbedingt als einen erscheinen lassen, der sich für ArbeiterInnenbelange einsetzt. Die Ursprünge der rechten Organisierung liegen bereits 2019 zurück, in der „United We Roll“-Aktion der kanadischen möchte-gern „Gelbe-Westen“-Bewegung, die von Anfang an ein Projekt der Rechten war. Hinter den aktuellen Aktionen stehen laut antihate.ca die separatistischen Wexit-Movement und Maverick Party:
Now, arriving from different corners of Canada, the fleet of semi-trucks, half tonne pickups, SUVs and more than a few sedans is on its way to Parliament Hill. Many of their supporters swear this isn’t about the far-right, and even, bizarrely, that they aren’t anti-vaccine. Most of them probably believe it, too. But the organizers behind the convoy, and where it emerged from, paint a very different picture.
Einer der wichtigsten Mitinitiatoren ist James Bauder von Canada Unity:
Despite presenting the so-called “Freedom Convoy” as a protest centered on the concerns of blue-collar workers, the “president” of the convoy apparently doesn’t believe in unity if you’re in a union. (…)
Two years ago, Bauder was part of a similar far-right convoy that mobbed a picket line and threatened to run over locked-out oil refinery workers.
Bauder livestreamed the convoy’s anti-union protest, which featured interviews with figures linked to the far-right “Yellow Vest” group.
Außerdem wurden laut einem anderen Bericht von PressProgress religiöse Fundamentalisten, sovereign citizens und Personen aus dem Unfeld von People‘s Party, Ontario First Party, Hugs over Masks, Unified Grassroots, Plaid Army und anderer rechtsdrehender Gruppierungen, deren Gefährlichkeit man nicht unterschätzen sollte, gesichtet.
Interessant ist auch, welche ArbeiterInnen oder Gewerkschaften die Proteste unterstützen bzw. mitfinanzieren. Man ahnt es: keine. Dafür jede Menge reiche Geschäftsleute, teils mit sehr kruden Ansichten, denen die Hygienemaßnahmen der kapitalfreundlichen Regierung Trudeau offensichtlich wohl ein unzumutbar großer Kostenfaktor sind:
„The convoy, which is spending its third weekend occupying the streets of downtown Ottawa, raised over $10 million through GoFundMe before it was shut down on February 4 for violating the platform’s Terms of Service prohibiting the “promotion of violence and harassment.”
Many of the wealthy donors that bankrolled the so-called “Freedom Convoy” say they stand behind their donations. Some want to see a change in government while others warn the occupation could be Canada’s last hope before “civil war.”
One thing these wealthy donors agree on is that they are being oppressed — some even liken the situation to “communism.”
Interessanter Bericht mit vielen weiteren Beispielen. Allesamt angepisste freiheitsliebende Werktätige, wie man sieht, die gegen staatliche Gängelungen protestieren, was? Indes scheinen die Convoys den Werktätigen, SanitäterInnen, Freuerwehrleuten und anderen Fernfahrern mächtig auf den Kecks zu gehen.
Hier auch mal ein Augenzeugenbericht vom 5. Februar, der das Geschehen in Ottawa in den letzten Tagen m.E. ganz gut beschreibt. Lohnt sich auch in Gänze durchzulesen:
I know there is racism underlying this, because I know their organizers are rooted in the more overtly racist movements that paved the way for this one, but I don’t think a naive passerby would necessarily notice it unless they happened to be in the right place at the right time. I have heard of people of colour being harassed by members of the convoy protest but that is definitely not most of their main activity most of the time and I don’t see a single sign about immigration, race or colonialism the whole time I’m there. I did notice two overtly anti-semitic signs, mostly of the text-heavy “list of conspiracies” variety that I’ve also seen on conspiracy theorists at broad-based left-wing protests in the past. There are a number of right-wing symbols dotted among the crowd, including a surprising number of “Don’t Tread On Me” flags, but no evidence of known Canadian far-right or neo-Nazi organizations out with their colours and symbols on display. Later on Twitter I notice somebody posted a picture of 6 members of the far-right patriot “Canada First” organization out in balaclavas in the streets that same day, but I didn’t happen to encounter them in person. I had expected to see more evidence of the overt fascists of Quebec and Canada recruiting but I couldn’t find it on Saturday. Maybe they’re hiding or maybe the crowd was just too big for me to find them. There are a lot of white people here but it’s definitely not a homogenous crowd, maybe not even a lot whiter than many of the environmental or other left-wing demonstrations I’ve been to in the past.
It was huge on Saturday. Police on Friday reported “about 350” protestors downtown on Friday and said nothing about numbers on Saturday but there were definitely thousands. The success of the trucks themselves as a space-claiming tactic for this group can not be understated. Every street in and out of the area around parliament is blocked by large vehicles, adorned with signs and flags and with protestors inside the cabs, honking the horns and smiling and waving at their crowd, many of whom are carrying “Thank You Truckers” signs and reserving their biggest shows of enthusiasm for encounters with the actual trucks. Even on days where their numbers are lower it is difficult to imagine what police or counter-protestor tactic would successfully undermine their control on the blocks surrounding parliament hill. There are a lot of them on and in front of the hill, where a sort of “main stage” has been set up on the back of a truck for speakers and announcements, but they have the whole neighbourhood. Several blocks away a park acts as a logistics hub, people are set up there with free food, firewood and other supplies. All of the streets in between and in fact much of downtown are actively part of the protest zone, filled with people yelling and chanting and the ubiquitous sound of truck horns that has drawn so much of the attention of local counter-protestors. I imagine that every conspiracy theorist I’ve ever encountered in the region is here, plus many more. I am used to seeing such people alone in a crowd but it is a bit disturbing to notice just how many of them there actually are now that they’re all in one place. There are signs and pamphlets everywhere about every wingnut conspiracy I’ve ever heard and even some that I haven’t – microchips in vaccines, THE JEWS, lizards, you name it. One sign tells me that a triad of weasels are working together to control the population with the vaccine chip: the Trudeau government, the mainstream media, and the Public Service Alliance of Canada. I hope somewhere out there a PSAC member is proud to be elevated to such a high status. I had intended to talk to more people but literally every conversation I overheard was about a known conspiracy – 3 guys behind me talking about 5G and China, a woman explaining The Great Reset to her school-aged children, a Francophone father telling his kids that masks are bad for their lungs. At the end of the day on the bus home I psych myself up to ask two protestors behind me to explain their movement to me, only to give up when I hear them whispering to each other about how much more needs to be exposed about chemtrails. I am struck by an obvious point that I hadn’t really contemplated before, that a lot of very normal-looking people with families, jobs and nice smiles are in fact followers of some of the conspiracies I think of as the most irrational and impossible to believe. I assume this has increased a lot since the pandemic but I can’t prove it.
Inzwischen formierte sich auch der in seiner Ausrichtung immer noch recht diffuse Widerstand gegen die „Besatzung“ oder den „Protest“, je nach dem, wie man das eigentlich sehen will. Die ansonsten nicht sehr zögerliche Polizei ist angeblich überfordert mit dieser Form der Raumnahme, wenn überwiegend weiße mittelständische UnternehmerInnen und Selbständige die Innenstadt mit ihren großen Fahrzeugen zuparken. (Jaja, es gibt auch Nichtweiße unter ihnen, die gibt es auch unter Proud Boys. Was tut es zu Sache? Sind es etwa keine gewaltbereiten Rechten?) In Wet‘suwet‘en, wo ein festgefahrener Landkonflikt seit mindestens einem halben Jahr akut eskaliert, ist die kanadische Polizei nicht überfordert und den völkischen ZeitgenosInnen dient er aus unerklärlichen Gründen eh nicht als Beispiel im Kampf gegen staatlich verordnete Unterdrückung. Wie auch immer, in Ottawa werden die herumfahrenden Convoy-Gruppen blockiert, mit diversem Zeug beworfen, es gibt Gegendemonstrationen, die sich auch nicht nachsagen lassen, sie wären Trudeau-Antifa. It‘s Going Down ist im Allgemeinen eine sehr vernünftige Quelle.
Apropos „große Fahrzeuge“. Dass der Protest aus Tausenden und Abertausenden von LKWs besteht, scheint auch ein Mythos zu sein. Nun, Jeeps und SUVs gelten auch als „groß“ genug und nehmen tatsächlich viel Platz ein. Aus diesem Grund nutzt man gerne für Mobilisationszwecke Fotos und Videos mit vielen Truckern, die zu anderen Zeiten und bei anderen Gelegenheiten entstanden sind. Hauptsache es spricht die richtigen Leute an.
Und solche gab es anscheinend weltweit. Wie die Freedom Convoys woanders abgelaufen sind, muss man noch genauer schauen. In deutschen Landen hat sich die auf den 7. Februar angesetzte Fahrt nach Berlin als Riesenflop erwiesen. Wenn man hinter jedem Fake die ultimative Offenbarung wittert, versucht man jedes Phantasma im realen Leben zu emulieren. Erinnert sich jemand noch an die deutschen Ableger der „Gelben Westen“? Oder direkt aus den USA über die QAnon-Kanäle angespülten Gerüchte über den Einsatz von Dominion-Wahlmaschinen bei der Bundestagswahl 2021? (Auch die reposten mittlerweile nur noch Russia Today, es ist nicht ein mal mehr zu Scmunzeln). Es wandern Leute unter uns, die sich immer weniger für Realität der Gesellschaft interessieren, die sie umgibt. Also schaffte man, weil vermutlich Wagners Walkürenritt im Kopf zu laut spielte, sich zwischen „Konvoi“- und „Convoy“-Gruppen auf Telegram zu verirren, und fuhr mit einigen Dutzend PKWs aufs Geratewohl nach Berlin, wo man nicht besseres zu tun hatte als sich „SpaziergängerInnen“ anzuschließen.
Der deutschen Komödie Schuss war das allerdings noch nicht. Nachdem die Schuldigen feststehen, müssen die VolksgenossInnen sich aber noch bis zum 14.02. entscheiden, ob sie demütig ihre jeweiligen Bundeslandhauptstädte anfahren und sich den Montagdemos anschließen oder noch ein mal einen großen Wurf riskieren und Brüssel blockieren fahren. Keine Sorge, auf Telegram findet sich immer irgendein „befreundeter Polizeiobermeister Harald“, den man aus Sicherheitsgründen nie im richtigen Leben treffen wird, der das alles wohlwollend betreut (soll heißen, die Staatsgewalt zwinkert einem zu und gibt insgeheim grünes Licht). Indes war 7. Februar z.B. in Leipzig-Engelsdorf auch ohne Konvois oder Convoys (sorry, ich blicke auch nicht mehr durch) finster genug.
